Dimmu Borgir es una banda noruega de black metal sinfónico con reminiscencias de black metal melódico. Fue fundada en 1993 por Ian Kenneth Åkesson (Tjodalv), Stian Thoresen (Shagrath) y Sven Atle Kopperud (Silenoz) en Oslo. Éstos dos últimos han sido los únicos miembros estables desde entonces.

La banda ha sido fuertemente criticada por el supuesto ablandamiento de su sonido por una gran parte de los aficionados al black metal.

"Dimmu Borgir" significa "Fortaleza Oscura" en noruego, también es un conjunto de cuevas formadas por la lava en Islandia que según los noruegos son la entrada al averno infernal.

Desde su debut en 1994, la banda ha publicado ocho álbumes de estudio, un recopilatorio y cuatro EP´s. Han recibido tres premios Spellemann (conocidos como el Grammy noruego): en 2001 por Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, en 2003 por Death Cult Armageddon y en 2007 por el videoclip de «The Serpentine Offering», y han participado en festivales como el Inferno Festival, el Ozzfest, el Download Festival y el Wacken Open Air.

Su octavo álbum de estudio, In Sorte Diaboli se convirtió en el primer álbum de black metal en ser número 1 en una lista de álbumes al conseguirlo en Noruega.

También entró en el Billboard 200 llegando al puesto 43, la posición más alta de un grupo noruego desde a-ha. Su siguiente álbum, Abrahadabra, alcanzó el puesto 42 en Estados Unidos.
